TeleScan 2024: Year in review for a teleultrasound company

1. You learned more about us

We finalized our website! You can now find all the information you need about our software and services—and see how TeleScan benefits all sizes and types of obstetric providers.

Speaking of the website, we also added an on-demand demo. This 6-minute video gives a sneak peek into everything TeleScan’s teleultrasound software can do. We also published our first monthly newsletter back in February. It covers all things telesonography® including company and product updates, unique resources, and industry news. Sign up on the website!

2. We became better acquainted with you

We presented on the big stage, hosted giveaways, and got to know so many of you at industry events this year. From AIUM UltraCon to the Florida and Texas Association of Community Health Centers to the Louisiana Primary Care Association, we had a great time seeing you in person.

3. We added five new states to our service area

First, we expanded into Kansas, where one of our new clients serves a small town of 5,000 and is now bringing much-needed maternal-fetal medicine services to an underserved area.

We’re also live in Alaska (that’s right, Alaska!), where our new partner is the only birth center in the southeast region of the state and serves fifteen communities.

TeleScan also ventured into Colorado, where a client faced significant revenue loss when their two sonographers resigned. This forced them to refer all their patients to a third party. However, by implementing TeleScan’s telesonography services, they brought those patients back in-house, significantly improving patient convenience and satisfaction.

Let's not forget the states of Virginia and West Virginia. Our new Virginia partner couldn’t capture OB ultrasound information at their hospital when emergency patients came in, and they needed 24-hour ultrasound coverage. TeleScan worked with this partner, and we are now offering them our normal 8 am - 5 pm coverage to capture all daytime patients and working to help them achieve their goal of 24-hour coverage.

In West Virginia, our new partner couldn’t offer in-house ultrasound due to a shortage of sonographers, causing a big problem in patient compliance. We enabled them to provide in-house diagnostic ultrasound and keep patients in care.

4. Awards – TeleScan wins first international award

We were truly astonished when our name was called during the May 2 virtual ceremony for the FemTech World Awards. The judges shared, “One of the reasons we have chosen TeleScan is because we truly connected with the story of Blanca Lesmes, CEO of TeleScan, who created a remote ultrasound service to provide equal healthcare to women in areas where access to medical care is difficult. We believe the software is an innovation in maternity health and is significant to protecting women and their babies through early identification of high-risk pregnancies.” You can read the press release and their web article featuring Blanca.

By the way... our teleultrasound software also received an honorable mention in Fast Company’s 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards. Read the press release here.

5. We published our first peer-reviewed paper...

We were thrilled to be published in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography’s March/April 2024 issue. We demonstrated that TeleScan’s telesonography services decreased patient exam time and report turnaround times in an under-resourced OB/GYN clinic, which correlated with decreases in the time until the next appointment and cleared longstanding backlogs. Importantly, this efficiency was achieved without forfeiting diagnostic accuracy or patient satisfaction. Not a JDMS subscriber? You can also read a free version on our website.

6. Guest post highlights

CEO Blanca Lesmes published a couple of articles through FemTech World. In the first, she talks about maternal healthcare and democratization without compromising care. She also discusses the challenging environment rural hospitals and FQHCs face, what proposed ideas won’t work, and which solutions hold promise. You can read the full article on Femtech World.

Blanca’s second article speaks about how the large-scale adoption of telemedicine and the advent of artificial intelligence in healthcare may be the keys we’ve been searching for to unlock that holy grail of healthcare: democratization. But we need our healthcare experts to lead the way. Read the full article here on Femtech World.

7. We released TeleScan 2.0

The 2.0 update enables JPEG image usage, making the upload and download of cine clips faster and easier—especially for low-connectivity areas. Our telesonographer® screens also received a major design overhaul, and we’ve organized telesonographer work by exam type rather than trimester, which will streamline diagnostic screens based on what is needed for that particular exam.

8. First manuscripts added to our case study library

Our case study library saw its first two entries this year. The first focuses on a Texas Health Center that added ultrasound services and increased its patient show rate. An OB/GYN provider at the site said, “Offering in-house ultrasounds through TeleScan has been a game-changer for our patients. The image quality is fantastic, and we can review results with our patients on the same day. That prevents a lot of frustration and anxiety for them and enables quicker treatment and care from us.”

The second entry tells the story of an OB/GYN clinic that achieved timeliness of care with a hybrid service model that included onsite and remote sonographers., “Our physicians are so happy with the hybrid care model. TeleScan helps them see more patients in a timely manner, which is a huge stress reliever,” said the Care Center Manager.

9. We heard more good things from you

The service is great! An OB/GYN provider said, “Providers in our clinic value TeleScan, and our patients love it. They provide excellent service, and I have nothing but positive things to say about it!”

We are a true partner! One of our partners recently had to take down their Wi-Fi network due to security issues. Since TeleScan uses the internet, you might think that disrupted our ability to see patients—but you'd be pleasantly surprised! After establishing a hard connection via ethernet, a couple of backend updates, and a quick refresh, TeleScan was back up and running. While our partner's other ultrasound system was down, TeleScan served as an alternate way to serve patients—a huge win!

Outstanding implementation process. Adding a new service line can be incredibly challenging, but we work with our clients to make it a seamless experience. Check out what this Practice Manager had to say: “Everything has been great. They’ve been very patient with us while we worked out some issues. TeleScan trained us very well, and the system itself is operating well.”

As we close this year out, we’re so thankful to everyone on this journey with us. Because of you, we’ve had another stellar year of increasing access to ultrasound. Here’s to serving more patients and making obstetric ultrasound even more accessible in 2025!
